How confused Buhari is playing Nigerians like rats

Editor’s note : Mixed reactions have trailed the removal of subsidy on petrol which was announced by the federal government recently. The decision of the present administration to remove subsidy has been viewed in some quarters as a betrayal by the All Progressives Congress (APC) which promised not to toll that line. In this regard, senior editor, Kess Ewubare of Naij.com explains how the sudden removal of subsidy on petrol has portrayed President Muhammadu Buhari as a serial promise breaker. Many Nigerian were shell-shocked when the minister of state for petroleum resources, Dr. Ibe Kachikwu announced the removal of subsidy on petrol. The unexpected announcement The federal government’s announcement of an increase in the pump price of premium motor spirit (PMS), otherwise called petrol from N86 per litre to N145 per litre on Wednesday, May 11 came as a shock to many Nigerians who never saw this change coming. The announcement of the new pump price was disclosed by the minister of state for petroleum resources, Dr. Ibe Kachikwu, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja. Kachikwu said the decision was reached at a stakeholders’ meeting presided over by Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo and attended by the leadership of the Senate, House of Representatives, the Nigeria governors’ forum and labour unions, including the Nigeria Labour Congress, Trade Union Congress, Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers, and Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria. According to him, the new pump price will ensure increased supply and stabilise the quantity of petrol in the country. He said: “We expect that this new policy will lead to improved supply and competition and eventually drive down pump prices, as we have experienced with diesel. “In addition, this will also lead to increased product availability and encourage investments in refineries and other parts of the downstream sector. It will also prevent diversion of petroleum products and set a stable environment for the downstream sector in Nigeria, ” Kachikwu said as reported in the Nation newspaper of May 12, 2016. No doubt, the issue of subsidy has remained a focal point of discus in Nigeria owing to the huge subsidy payment which costs the federal Government colossal sums to the tune of about N1trillion annually. Many Nigerians agree that the payment on subsidy has been shrouded in fraud following allegations that some independent marketers hide under the guise of the policy to stake claim to monies they didn’t work for. However, the way the Buhari administration unilaterally carried out the hike in the price of petrol appears to be insensitive to the plight of Nigerians whose purchasing power to get petrol has been hindered by economic challenges. Buhari the serial promise breaker It is surprising that President Muhammadu Buhari who has earned the reputation for backtracking on his campaign promises, just like a DJ switching songs from reggae to blues, has hiked the price of petrol in a coup like fashion after promising not to do so during his campaign. Few months ago, Buhari also reiterated his resolve not hike the price of petrol on the grounds that doing so trigger rising prices on transportation, food and rents. But having earned the reputation as a serial promise breaker, Buhari hiked the price in defiance to his promise not to do so. Following suit in this reggae to blues rhythm change, the minister of state for petroleum resources, Dr. Ibe Kachikwu who has consistently promised and failed to make petrol available to Nigerians said the new price for petrol “will also lead to increased product availability and encourage investments in refineries and other parts of the downstream sector”. The above claim by the minster that the hike in pump price will encourage investments in refineries in the country is a paradox to his statement in March that importing petrol is cheaper than producing the product in the country’s refineries. Rather than removing subsidy entirely, the present administration could also have sanitised the subsidy regime and continue with the process knowing that this is the only way majority of Nigerians get to benefit from their government which has consistently failed to provide basic infrastructure such as good roads, electricity, water, the list is endless. During the Jonathan administration, the APC led protests against the removal of fuel subsidy Even if the administration was bent on removing subsidy, it should have put in place a process which would have allowed subsidy to be effaced gradually. The whole subsidy wahala resulted from the mismanagement from successive government which made Nigeria dependent on importation of petroleum products despite being the world’s sixth largest oil producer. Added to this, successive administrations also failed to check the serious transparency issues which shrouded the subsidy payments for several decades. In other words, corruption was the problem and not subsidy because governments in other parts of the country offer subsidies on essential services to their citizens. But in Nigeria, subsidy became an avenue for cronies of politicians to siphon the nation’s resources. More reggae to blues policies to follow soon Whether they call it deregulation of the downstream sector, or removing subsidy on petrol, what, President Muhammadu Buhari and, Ibe Kachikwu should realise is that the common Nigerian who struggles to pay transportation and fuel his generator to avoid dying of heat rash sees this hike in fuel price as a punishment they don’t deserve. While the APC administration continues to fantastically bring about the illusive change they promised by backtracking on their uncountable promises, I guess Nigerians will have to brace up for more reggae to blues policies by the administration. Do you agree with me?

Herdsmen from Libya responsible for attacks – Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari says the fall the Ghadaffi regime made some trained militia men to disperse to countries in the region – Says it is the custom for herdsmen to roam about in search for grazing areas for their cattle – Blames the seizure of land meant for cattle routes and grazing areas marked for herdsmen by some persons for the escalation of the crisis between farmers and herdsmen President Muhammadu Buhari has said herdsmen responsible for the attacks across Nigeria migrated from Libya. President Muhammadu Buhari has blamed militia men from Libya for the herdsmen attacks in Nigeria. Buhari who made this disclosure on Saturday, May 14 in London on the CNN said following the fall of the Ghadaffi regime, some people from the Sahel who were trained by the regime dispatched to other countries in the region and began causing trouble. It is a governmental project now to trace, disarm, try and discipline them.” The president who said it was the custom for herdsmen to roam about to feed their cattle complained that the cattle routes and grazing areas marked for herdsmen had been taken over and turned to farms by some influential persons. He after people took over the land meant for cattle routes and grazing areas, pockets of clashes between farmers and herders erupted in parts of the country. The source stated that the armed men raided the village in their numbers from neighbouring Tarka local government at about 11pm, shooting periodically and setting ablaze houses and huts in the community. Shekarau denies receiving PDP campaign fund

Ibrahim Shekarau says he does not think his corruption investigation is politically motivated – He denies receiving campaign fund from the EFCC – He says he is ready to prove his innocence to the anti-graft commission A former presidential candidate, Ibrahim Shekarau who is being investigated by the Economic and Financial Commsion (EFCC) on corruption related issues has said he will not mind spending 10 years in the commission’s custody to prove his innocence. READ ALSO: EFCC arrest ex-governor of Akwa Ibom state Shekarau who served as minister of information during the administration of Goodluck Jonathan was implicated by Alhaji Aminu Bashir Wali who is the former foreign affairs minister who confessed to the EFCC that he received the money on behalf of Kano PDP. Wali said he received N950 million campaign fund and that he gave Shekarau his share although the latter denied receiving money although he confessed the money was shared in his house. Premium Times reports that the former Kano state governor said on Sunday, May 15 that he was ready to prove his innocence and said he does not believe his trial had any political undertone. “I am not suspecting any political undertone in my arrest but rather regard it as an act of God to test my faith. “I was told that one of the beneficiaries of the N950 million in question implicated me; that I was given N25 million as my share of the money but could not state where, how and when.” READ ALSO: Two ex-ministers make shocking revelations to EFCC The fund is believed to be part of the infamous $2.1 billion arms deal fund which was mismanaged by the office of the national security adviser. Shekarau said Wali was the main person that should be fingered in the campaign fund saga “Wali approached me on the day he collected the money and said because of security he wanted to share the N950m in my residence and I obliged. “He brought the money to my house around 2am. I was at my room upstairs when they came in and I remained there up till the time they finished the sharing. Wali and some other party members shared the money according to the directives given to them. So I did not even see the money with my eyes.” SHARE THIS NEWS!

Sheikh Gumi highlights Buhari's errors; profers solutions

Sheikh Gumi faults the method President Buhari is employing in his famous fight against corruption – The popular cleric advises Buhari to work with every region of the country in order to bring unity – He says rich people are now afraid to spend money due to intimidation and that leaves the poor people poorer Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has criticised President Muhammadu Buhari for the way he is ripping Nigeria apart and the method he is employing in fighting corruption. In an interview with Sahara Reporters, Gumi accused President Buhari of not making the unity of Nigeria a priority and that this has given birth to agitation by different regions. He said: “The government should have formed a Government of National Unity right from the beginning. For example, tell the South-East to bring whoever they trust to represent them in the government. The South-West brought Prof. Yemi Osinbajo as running mate; he was not the choice of Buhari. READ ALSO: Gumi advises Buhari to reverse tough economic policies “The same way that you did with South-West do with the South- South and South-East. This is what I mean by Government of National Unity because if the militants believe that they are represented well in the government, they will allow the oil to flow. “If the crude oil flows, our refineries will work. The President needs to listen; he can’t afford to be adamant anymore. He should listen to knowledgeable individuals and not sycophants who supported him. Nigeria is for everybody. It is not for any single political party or the President.” On President Buhari’s order that Niger Delta militant bombing pipelines be crushed, Gumi said it was not the best way to deal with the situation. “How can they deal with the militants in the first place, when they are holding the nation’s umbilical cord? You are fighting Boko Haram in the North, and you want to fight the militants in the creeks. You don’t fight on two fronts at the same time. That was one of the reasons why Adolf Hitler failed in the Second World War. The government should sit down with them and ask them the reasons for their agitation. “Don’t forget; they were embittered that their man Goodluck Jonathan was defeated. Their argument now is, ‘if you hate our man, then leave our oil.’ No section of the country has the solution of Nigeria’s problem. “So, everybody should be brought on board. Even if the South-South brings Government Tompolo as their man, we should accept him, so long as they trust him; so that we will have stability. “A military solution is not the best option in this circumstance. Former President Umaru Yar’adua could swallow his pride as president and negotiate with the militants. Jonathan also did it. But a military man cannot do it because it will hurt his ego. But if he doesn’t do it, he will kill the nation.” Sheikh Gumi said Buhari was treading a precarious path as president because there is a tussle between the rich and the poor and his fight against corruption needed a new dimension. He insisted diplomacy is the right way to handle corruption so rich people would pump money into the country. “Buhari’s coming into politics has accentuated the class struggle in Nigeria. The antagonism between the rich and poor can sometimes be more dangerous that religious differences. I saw this class struggle coming because the masses will always rush to Buhari because they believe that he will bring justice and food on the table for them. They want him to emasculate the rich for them; he either does it, or they will categorise him as a failure. READ ALSO: Chibok girls show Shekau could be better than Buhari “So, once you put a leader in that kind of situation, then you are already introducing a class struggle into the already compounded problem. In addition to our tribal problems, our religious differences, and the North/South divide, there is now a class problem because the talakawa just want to see the rich imprisoned. And if they are tasking the president to do that, and if he does not do it he is a failure, then he will definitely fail because he cannot do it. “So, the kind of leader that we needed at that time was one who will pacify the rich and still have the confidence of the poor. By so doing, the rich will help in building the economy by setting up companies that will generate employment. “That is why the Prophet (SAW) said that you can get with leniency what you can never get by force. He said that when leniency enters anything, it decorates it. And strictness, violence blemishes and destroys the beauty of whatever they enter. “So, what you get with diplomacy, you cannot get with violence. If you want to deal with corruption in Nigeria, you have to deal with it in a diplomatic way. No one should be afraid of returning the money that they have looted. But when the poor is always rating your administration by the number of people you have caught, then you are in trouble because you cannot catch the big ones. “Because if you do so, you will destroy your government and if you don’t catch them, the poor will say that you have changed. The president is even fighting the war on corruption the wrong way. When you fight corruption, it will naturally fight back. Corruption has become an international institution. You will hear foreign leaders condemning corruption, but they are engaging in it because their countries benefit from it. READ ALSO: Prominent cleric reveals reasons of Nigeria’s problems “So, the President needs to tread carefully in fighting corruption with the way things are now because it will frighten the upper class of the society. It will put them on pause, and this is not healthy for a developing economy like our own. “You need the rich to infuse money into the system and fund projects. For example, I went to a fundraiser for an Islamic school. Big men came, but not a single one donated a Kobo, not even a pledge because they may be asked where they got the money from. “So, there is fright, and this is hurtful to the economy. The war on corruption should purely be a law and order issue. Right now, if EFCC invites someone, the next day it is in the newspapers. “The damage this kind of thing causes to people’s reputation is very severe, especially if they are found to be innocent.”

Nigeria is facing its worst moment of unfavourable economy - Idowu Akinlotan

Editor’s note: President Muhammadu Buhari while in London has addressed the issue of Fulani herdsmen attacks, saying that militants are of foreign origin. Idowu Akinlotan of The Nation shares his views on why Nigeria is facing its worst moment of angst since the civil war. The herdsmen troubling Nigeria were of foreign origin After few public officials, especially the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Solomon Arase, had suggested that the herdsmen troubling Nigeria were of foreign origin, President Muhammadu Buhari has in far away London finally succinctly addressed the matter. The herdsmen are indeed foreigners, he said, and those responsible for pillaging communities would not go unpunished. No one complains any longer that the president addresses salient national issues during his foreign trips. Perhaps the ambience is responsible. Neither Mr Arase, who has vigorously defended the thesis, nor the president, who has just latched on to the strange idea, has presented incontrovertible proofs showing how foreign attackers could penetrate Nigeria so deeply with foreign cattle unchallenged, knew the terrain so well, and had such lasting disagreements with many local communities that their famed ‘long memory’ prompted them to unimaginable bestiality. READ ALSO: Are we all Biafrans? This sad and inconsistent thesis is compounded by the president’s intriguing response in Katsina to the issue of herdsmen trouble and agitation for Biafra. Speaking at the Emir of Katsina’s palace during his last visit to the state, the president seemed to find a tenuous link between the herdsmen crisis and the Biafra agitation. He said: “I always say the civil war was fought for the unity of Nigeria because then we hadn’t even discovered oil, let alone enjoy it. But two million people were killed. The way the Sahara is advancing, with Boko Haram, growing number of people, and uncertainty over rainfall, in a land where we fought civil war leading to the death of about two million, for someone to just say he will chase us out? So where do we go?” It is not clear whether the president was misquoted. If he was not, he should like to clarify who the ‘us’ are that Biafra agitators want to chase out. Was it the rest of Nigeria? That would be untenable. Was it herdsmen or people living in the Sahelian belt? It was no doubt a curious and worrisome statement to make. Fulani think like a transnational people operating like musketeers So far, the herdsmen problem has assumed terrifying dimension only because government officials have demonstrated incompetence or conflict of interest. They claim the herdsmen are foreigners, and attribute their arms to the crises in Mali and Libya. Yet, leaders of cattle rearers associations in parts of Nigeria have owned up to fomenting reprisal attacks on the grounds that local populations and angry farmers provoked them. This was clearly the case in Agatu local government area of Benue state where herdsmen recently sacked many farming communities. What is also clear from the statements of the herdsmen is that the Fulani think like a transnational people operating like musketeers. An attack against one is an attack against all. They may come to one another’s aid; but it does not absolve local herdsmen of blame and responsibility. It is reckless and preposterous for any Nigerian official to make claims that even local herdsmen find ludicrous and specious. Handling the Biafra problem As if the trouble from herdsmen is not enough, it is mystifying that the president is inexpertly handling the Biafra problem as well. Regardless of this column’s opinion of Biafra, he has repeatedly counselled that Biafra is an idea that cannot be crushed because of its location in the minds of its adherents. To tackle it would require much more than diatribe, threats and federal might. If Biafra military campaign were to be triggered today, its militants are unlikely to engage in open and direct confrontation. Its proponents would embark on the Iraqi, Afghanistan and guerilla-type of campaigns. It would be a cruel and unwindable war. Is that the road Nigerian leaders want to impulsively travel? The problem is that there was no closure to the civil war. No amount of blackmail to the Igbo young who were not born before the war will eradicate the idea of Biafra until the country restructures and finds a closure to the recurring nightmare. READ ALSO: Panic as Fulani herdsmen invade another village, kill 12 And just as the whole country had transformed into a seething cauldron of troubles, the government caps the crises with a hike in fuel price from N86.50/l to N145/l. They’ll probably get away with it, and the unions, which are angling for negotiations, will have an ineffectual response. The economic imperatives on the ground do not favour the sustenance of former price regimes and paradigms. But what if the naira further plunges in value and crude oil prices begin to rise strongly? Can anyone guarantee there would be no further rise in prices of fuel and other goods? No one trusts the government to embark on a scientific and systematic response to the expected pauperisation of the people, whether the response comes in terms of palliatives or in terms of organised economic measures to shore up wages and employment. There is no history of that kind of salutary response in these parts. And it is not clear whether this government, which is groaning under old and retrogressive political and economic paradigms, can unleash the creative potential within all Nigerians. Nigeria is facing its worst moment of angst since the civil war. The problems are multifarious and spreading, but the language of the federal government is disturbingly full of threats and violence, making it hard for them to summon the honesty, ingenuity and realism needed to successfully tackle a problem poised to get worse in the coming months and years.

Nnamdi Kanu writes poem from Kuje prison

Editor’s note: The leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu on Thursday, May 12, released a poem from Kuje Prison in Abuja. The letter which was sent by IPOB to NAIJ.com was said to have been released through a lawyer representing Kanu. Sit back, relax and enjoy yourself while you read through Kanu’s poem below. The leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu I am Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of Indigenous people of Biafra and also the director of radio Biafra. I have restored Biafra without a gunshot, I have destroyed Nigeria with truth and I have conquered Nigeria with Chiukwuokikeabiama. They waited for me to bomb and shoot, but i refused to use metallic bullet and atomic bombs, I only used intellectual bullets and bombs and I have flawlessly won the war. I stood just ordinary radio station and propagated the gospel of Chukwuokikeabiama, the word of God is power and that power have destroyed Nigeria and restored Biafra. I observed freedom of speech and fearlessly preached truth, I am fearless even before death because am prophesy of over 400 years ago. If God is not man then his prophesy shall come to pass and those that stand against God will know Chiukwuokikeabiama is creation. I have lawfully followed stipulated procedures for self-determination and have never been involved in any form of violence or crime, I have always told you Biafrans to be disciplined and law-abiding and you have made me proud. READ ALSO: Buhari must stop making comments on matters before the court – Nnamdi Kanu’s lawyer I am grateful that we are whiter than white and whiter than snow. We have no dishonour neither do we have any spot, they have killed us mercilessly and we have never killed back yet they arrested us and tried to break us to betray Biafra. They arrested me for saying the truth, nothing but the truth. They arrested me for demanding Biafra, they arrested me for embracing freedom of speech. They conspired and arrested me for being lawful and demanding attention. They arrested me because peace is prohibited in Nigeria; they arrested me because dialogue is impossible in Nigeria. They arrested me because I refused to take up arms, they arrested me because I defeated them intellectually. When a man is defeated by reason, he sought to discharge his frustration on justice. I am a prisoner of conscience and I am sure the world still have conscience. I am Nnamdi Kanu, I have chosen death, I shall die for Biafra and let my death give my generation a better life, let my death be a guarantee for a better future, let my death be your smile and let my death end your marginalization, subjugation, slavery and tears. I am Nnamdi Kanu the lion that chose death over the abuse of his people. I instead die than renounce Biafra, give me Biafra or kill me is where I stand. I have been arrested for nothing, I am a prisoner of conscience, they are here to break me, to make me renounce Biafra but they don’t know me, they don’t know Biafra is my religion and they don’t know renouncing Biafra is a death sentence, is like committing suicide. In their widest dream shall I commit suicide and I assure them that days of reckoning will come, for Chiukwuokikeabiama shall avenge the death of His children. I have taken an oath with the name of God that I shall never betray or give up Biafra because I knew this day will come. I am physically and psychologically prepared for this period. I took the oath and staked my family, my generations and everything I am, and so giving up Biafra in any condition is impossible, even at gun point, I will only accept my inevitable death than renounce Biafra. They came with every tactics they know to deceive me into signing off Biafra, they promised me freedom, heaven and earth, but I told devil to get behind me for the Kingdom of God worth nothing man can offer. I am more intelligent than them and I will defeat them to a point nothing will be left to fight for, Biafra will be and it has come to stay. I appeared in the court on 19th Feb 2016, in the face of this persecution to coerce me into giving up Biafra, I wore a clean white cloth and tagged Biafran flag under the pocket of my white lace. I tagged the flag there because that is where life is and this is to tell you that Biafra is why i breathe. I will never ever disappoint you and will die for Biafra to come. The Biafran flag badge tagged on my white lace is to remind the world that I am resolute and shall never in this life accept their gold to sale Biafra. The world has no option except giving me Biafra and everything in Nigeria shall be at risk if anything happens to me. Biafrans love me and together we have chosen death or give us Biafra, should anything happen to me then my command remains. Meanwhile, I have followed you great Biafrans and I must confess that I am satisfied, you have made me proud and my message to you all is to stay strong, remain resolute and focused. We must not give up, we should continue pushing strong, we should continue our peaceful protest because it is frustrating Nigerian government and we must keep spreading the message of Biafra and at the end we shall win. Saboteurs behind Edo APC crisis, Oshiomhole tells Oyinlola panel

Alexander Okere, Benin The Edo State Governor, Mr. Adams Oshiomhole, on Thursday, described the lingering crisis in the state chapter of the All Progressives Congress as the handiwork of enemies of the state and the party. He also said the crisis was being blown out of proportion. Oshiomhole said this at the Government House in Benin, when he received the members of the fact-finding committee set up by the national secretariat of the APC to assess the internal wrangling rocking the party in Edo State ahead of the state’s governorship election on September 10. The national leadership of the party had, on May 10, inaugurated the five-member reconciliation committee, led by a former governor of Osun State, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola, to look into the immediate and remote challenges affecting its Edo State chapter. Other members include Senator Osita Izunazo, Senator Victor Ndoma-Egba, Hajiya Fatimah Mohammed and Alhaji Ahmed Abdullahi. The Edo State chapter of the party has, for several months, been battling wfineh internal crisis ranging from the reported fallout between Oshiomhole and his deputy, Dr. Pius Odubu, over his (Odubu) decision to contest the governorship election. The recent impeachment of the former Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Mr. Victor Edoror, by 17 lawmakers, has also been linked to the crisis in the party in the state. But Oshiomhole noted that the state had been put in a bad light by individuals who claimed to be members of the APC but remained committed to the opposition party. He added, “The more dangerous enemies are those whom people purport to have joined the APC but their soul is in the PDP (Peoples Democratic Party). By the choice of their language and style and tactics, it is clear that they wish to be in the APC while working in futility hoping that they can discredit the APC so that their own party that they have grounded, dismantled and rest can hopefully be revived. “So maybe in seeking to settle us, you will also need to settle Abuja. Otherwise, we might just be shedding a crocodile tears. The headlines that you refer to are credited to people who purport to be in this party. When you see their language in the print and electronic media, you wonder if this is a Hiroshima war. “They are now the ones, having benefited from my labour and accomplishment, using the most uncouth and violent language to describe my person. The official attitude seems to be, ‘reconcile everybody.’ That is fi

INEC releases timetables for Edo, Ondo gov polls

A suicide bomb attack on Borno State secretariat, Maiduguri, on Thursday, left two persons dead and 19 others injured. A security official at the gate of the secretariat, who spoke on condition of anonymity to our correspondent, said the incident happened at about 12pm. He said the lone suicide bomber, who pretended to be a worker at the secretariat, was turned back at the gate when he did not have an identity card. According to him, workers at the secretariat had embarked on a verification exercise in order to fish out ghost workers. The security officials said the suicide bomber had a file on him to show at the gate that he was a civil servant working at the secretariat. He said, “We had to turn him back when he could not present an identity card. To our surprise, a few metres from the security post, the suicide bomber detonated the bomb strapped on him, killing himself and two other persons immediately. “The explosion equally caused injuries to 19 other persons who were rushed to the Borno State General Hospital, Maiduguri, for treatment.” He said the corpses of the two deceased were equally deposited at the morgue of the hospital. However, a reliable source said he saw rescue workers carrying away four corpses from the scene of the explosion.

Islamic Human Rights Commission protests in London

The Islamic Human Rights Commission (IHRC) has staged a protest in London where President Muhammadu Buhari is currently attending an anti-corruption summit. According to Sahara Reporters, the aim of the protest that was staged on Thursday, May 12, was to call the attention of President Muhammadu Buhari to the Zaria massacre, in which at least 350 Shi’ite Muslims were killed by the Nigerian army. Members of the IHRC also protested against the unlawful detention of Sheikh Ibrahim El-Zakzaky, the leader of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN). The bloody clash that took place in Zaria, Kaduna state, began when IMN supporters blocked a road in order to prevent a military convoy from passing through. However, the military claimed that the Shi’ites had attempted to assassinate Tukur Buratai, the chief of army staff. Following this incident, soldiers surrounded other locations where members of the IMN were gathered, including the residents of Sheikh El-Zakzaky, and began to fire indiscriminately upon them. The IMN leader was then detained and brutally beaten by soldiers. According to a Kaduna state government official, 347 bodies of Shi’ites were recovered from a local hospital mortuary and taken to a field near Mando where they were discreetly buried. However, the IMN believes that hundreds of other members have been killed and buried by the Nigerian army, bringing the potential death toll to over 800. Although the Kaduna state government established a Judicial Commission of Inquiry to investigate the incident, no concrete steps have been taken so far to bring the perpetrators of the massacre to book. The IHRC is hoping that its protest will pressure the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari and Nigerian military to thoroughly investigate the matter and bring justice to the families of the victims.

Buhari is ready to devalue naira?

Buhari’s government is ready to adopt a more flexible option in the management of foreign exchange – It would portend devaluation of the naira, but attract more investors to the country Vice-president Yemi Osinbajo The government of President Muhammadu Buhari has hinted that it may finally adopt a more flexible option in the management of foreign exchange, Guardian reports. Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo while addressing investors at a conference organised by Renaissance Capital in Lagos state noted that the government was ready to “substantially re-evaluate” its foreign exchange policy. The vice president’s statement is coming on the heels of recent hike in petrol prices in the country, under a new deregulated regime, despite the known stance of Buhari to the contrary. Osinbajo clarified that the more flexible foreign exchange policy would “be able to attract more capital into the system and ease business.” “We believe there must be some substantial re-evaluation of the foreign exchange policy, especially with a view to increasing foreign exchange supply, encouraging capital importation and also being able to allow free flow of remittances…we expect that with a more flexible policy, we will be able to attract more capital into the system and ease business,” he stated. Nigeria has for many months faced substantial weakening in revenue from crude oil exports and a consequent foreign exchange crisis, READ ALSO: USA to press Buhari for naira devaluation However, the federal government restated it would not devalue the currency and retained official exchange rate with the United States dollars at 197-199 naira to a dollar. At the black market prices ranged from 240 naira to 320 naira exchanging for one dollar. President Buhari on different occasions insisted that he was not persuaded Nigeria could benefit from a further devaluation of the naira as the country was not manufacturing enough for export and depended more on imported goods. This statement was necessary following the new pump price of petrol (between N135 and N145 per litre) from N86 and N86.50. We want Nigerians to understand that we feel the pain, and we have tried to avoid it since I came in October. We have done everything we can. “We first went on to the issue of the subsidies that we inherited which, by the way, were based on 50 to 55 million litres consumption, and we said the number looked bloated. So, we did an experiment and came to a conclusion that this country doesn’t consume more than 45 million litres a day. “Then we came to a second point and said, ‘We are not even going to have subsidy again. We are going yo exit it because there was just too much fraud involved in it.'” Speaking further, Kachikwu stated that the ministry was left with no option since Nigerians had struggled a lot. “Queues continue to go and they are back. And it will continue to happen unless we address the issues. READ ALSO: Breaking! Breaking news! Fuel subsidy removed; new price of fuel revealed!

The federal government of Nigeria has removed subsidy on fuel and it will now start to sell for N145 per litre.
This removal was made on Wednesday, May 11.
Until the removal, the official price of petrol was N87 per litre although consumers have been paying as much as N200 for fuel due to scarcity.
Ibe Kachikwu and President Muhammadu Buhari
The removal in fuel subsidy has been a lingering issue since President Muhammadu Buhari took over power.
The minister of state for petroleum product, Dr Emmanuel Ibe Kachikwu had said that the citizens were not benefitting from the subsidy which made it necessary to be removed.
An official in the petroleum industry had earlier said the federal government would deregulate the downstream sector of the Nigerian petroleum industry so as to put an end to scarcity.
The petroleum minister in a statement said the decision was taken based on the current challenges and that Nigerians have been paying exorbitant prices for fuel.
We have just finished a meeting of various stakeholders presided over by His Excellency, the Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
The meeting had in attendance the Leadership of the Senate, House of Representatives, Governors Forum, and Labour Unions (NLC, TUC, NUPENG, and PENGASSAN).
class=”text_exposed_show”>
The meeting reviewed:
“The current fuel scarcity and supply difficulties in the country.
“The exorbitant prices being paid by Nigerians for the product. These prices range on the average from N150 to N250 per litre currently.
“The meeting also noted that the main reason for the current problem is the inability of importers of petroleum products to source foreign exchange at the official rate due to the massive decline of foreign exchange earnings of the federal government. As a result, private marketers have been unable to meet their approximate 50% portion of total national supply of PMS.
Following a detailed presentation by the Honorable Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, it has now become obvious that the only option and course of action now open to the government is to take the following decisions:
“In order to increase and stabilise the supply of the product, any Nigerian entity is now free to import the product, subject to existing quality specifications and other guidelines issued by Regulatory Agencies.
” All Oil Marketers will be allowed to import PMS on the basis of FOREX procured from secondary sources and accordingly PPPRA template will reflect this in the pricing of the product.
“Pursuant to this, PPPRA has informed me that it will be announcing a new price band effective today, 11th May, 2016 and that the new price for PMS will not be above N145 per litre.
“We expect that this new policy will lead to improved supply and competition and eventually drive down pump prices, as we have experienced with diesel. In addition, this will also lead to increased product availability and encourage investments in refineries and other parts of the downstream sector. It will also prevent diversion of petroleum products and set a stable environment for the downstream sector in Nigeria.
“We share the pains of Nigerians but, as we have constantly said, the inherited difficulties of the past and the challenges of the current times imply that we must take difficult decisions on these sorts of critical national issues. Along with this decision, the federal government has in the 2016 budget made an unprecedented social protection provision to cushion the current challenges.
“We believe in the long term, that improved supply and competition will drive down prices.
“The DPR and PPPRA have been mandated to ensure strict regulatory compliance including dealing decisively with anyone involved in hoarding petroleum products.”
The vice president, Professor Yemi Osinbajo hinted earlier on Wednesday that Nigeria had reached a point where tough decisions had to be taken.
He said: “No matter how we slice it, we are in economic times that are challenging, but they provide us with some of the best opportunities for making a real difference in our economic life.
“I think that we are at a point that a lot has been said about subsidies and what to do with subsidies. I think we are at a point where we must make many difficult decisions and make very tough choices.
“But I think the Nigerian people are prepared for all what is required and all it would take to make a real difference. “In no way can a country make the kind of progress we expect it to make without being able to ensure that in public life our finance system is transparent and would ensure that there is accountability.”

FULANI HERDSMEN MUST GO (14 Days Ultimatum)

The least expected worst caused by deadly attacks by Fulani herdsmen, Abia State Governor, Okezie Ikpeazu has concluded plans to deploy the State Vigilante Services (AVS), popularly known as Bakassi Boys, to communities across the state to assist in providing security.

In Anambra, Governor Willie Obiano has convened a tripartite meeting of the leaders of the Fulani community in the state, the traditional rulers of agrarian communities and the state government to fashion out a proactive response to the menace.

Also, following a statement allegedly credited to Governor Ayodele Fayose that he had instructed farmers in Ekiti State to poison their water to ward off invasion by herdsmen, the Fulani cattle herdsmen in the state have resolved to take their case to the Council of Traditional Rulers.

The Abia State governor also vehemently condemned the killing of two butchers by soldiers at the abattoir in the Ogbor Hill area of Aba, which led to massive protests on Thursday in the commercial city.

In a statement he personally signed, Governor Ikpeazu described as “unfortunate” the incident “that led to the untimely death of this brother,” adding that he shared in the pains and grief of the family of the victims.

He announced that the soldier that murdered the butcher in cold blood had been arrested and taken into custody, and urged the people to remain calm as justice would be done.

“    I call on the people of Abia, especially those of us in Aba, to remain calm. I reassure all citizens of the state that the government is doing everything to protect lives and property of citizens from any attack,” he said.

Ikpeazu said he had “instructed and equipped security agencies in the state to ensure watertight security around our boarders and towns against any form of attack.”

Prior to the deployment of the Bakassi Boys, the governor said they would undergo “intensive training” that would last for two weeks which he directed should commence with immediate effect.

He explained that the deployment of the Bakassi Boys was to assist in community policing under the supervision of the Commissioner of Police, adding that more personnel would be enlisted into the AVS.

Ikpeazu directed all traditional rulers in the state to submit names of 10 youths from their community to the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs between Tuesday and Wednesday next week.

He further announced other security measures that he has put in place to ensure adequate security of lives and properties in the state.

“I have mandated the law enforcement agencies to search and screen all trucks and vehicles conveying livestock, food items and persons into the state from any part of the country. The law enforcement agencies will also search and screen markets and settlements where livestock and dealers are, to ensure security,” he said.

The state government, he said, has constituted a Farmers/Herdsmen Conflict Resolution Committee at the state level headed by the Commissioner of Police. Other members of the committee include the Brigade Commander, State Director of DSS, State Commandant of the NSCDC, the Naval Commander, and Special Adviser to the Governor on Security. Also included are Special Adviser to the Governor on Special Duties, State Chairman of Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Myati Allah and Saraki Hausa.

Similar committee has also been replicated in all the 17 local governments, headed by council chairmen, with other members to include Divisional Police Officers, heads of NSCDC, DSS in the local governments as well as chairmen of Traditional Rulers Council and leaders of Hausa communities.

Governor Ikpeazu said: “I want to encourage our people to report any suspicious movement of strange persons within our communities to the Traditional Rulers or call any of the following Police Emergency Control phone numbers, 08079210003, 08079210004, 08079210005, 08035425405 for prompt deployment of a Rapid Response Unit formed for the purpose of security alert.”

In Anambra, while addressing the gathering  at the Governor’s Lodge, Amawbia, Governor Obiano revealed that there were suspicious movements in some parts of the state that were being carefully monitored to ensure that there was no immediate threat to the security of the state.

“What we intend to do is to send the Fulanis that are living with us here to go and meet with the Fulanis in that area with a view to finding out whether they are coming in peace or otherwise. “More importantly, we want Fulanis in this committee to tell the members of this committee if their people are nursing any grievance in whatever form,” Governor Obiano explained and further pointed out that early in the life of his administration he had set up a special committee to nurture mutually beneficial relations between the Hausa/Fulani Community in the state and their hosts.

“I don’t want anybody to take laws into their hands. That is why we set up this committee and we have agreed that compensation should be paid for any losses on either side. That is the way to co-exist in a multi-ethnic and diverse society. More importantly, we agreed at the Security Council Meeting that we will not allow herdsmen to carry arms. That is a clear directive from Abuja. Herdsmen are not supposed to bear arms. Please, if you see any herdsmen with AK47, report them early to the police so that they can be picked up,” Obiano advised.

In Ekiti, Fayose was quoted to have made the statement in Ibadan on Tuesday while attending a programme organised by the Nigerian Union of Journalists, Oyo Chapter.

A member of the ethnic group confided in THISDAY in Ado Ekiti that they received Fayose’s statement with shock, saying they had taken a final decision to lodge a formal complaint to the Ewi of Ado Ekiti, Oba Rufus Adeyemo Adejugbe over the dangers inherent in the comment.

He said the members would also meet with the state traditional council, particularly its chairman and Ologotun of Ogotun Ekiti, Oba Oladapo Samuel Oyebade after their encounter with the Ado monarch.

The source, who didn’t want to be quoted because of the sensitivity of the issue and for not being authorised to speak on behalf of the Fulani herdsmen, said the statement credited to the governor could spark up crisis between them and the farmers, even when such is unwarranted.

“What many people don’t know is that there is a difference between Fulani and Bororo. We have been in Ado for long, doing our businesses and I don’t think any of us could resort to killing of our hosts, what for?

“We know that the Obas own the towns and the land, so we want to appeal to them to help us reach out to the governor not to go to that extent. We have been cohabiting peacefully with our hosts and I don’t think such a statement would help in sustaining the existing peace in the land.

“Though, we want to make it abundantly clear that we condemn the wanton killings and maiming of innocent Nigerians by some suspected herdsmen, but we are assuring that such will not happen in Ekiti.

“As much as we are ready to cooperate with government and other stakeholders to make the state peaceful, we should also be mindful of our comments, actions and inactions because that too could ignite unnecessary tension,” he said.
